An adult Irish Wolfhound needs about 2 lb to 2.5 lb kibble per day. Puppies need about the same amount but split in two or three meals.

The dog should have time to rest after eating to decrease the danger of bloat and torsion...

Kibble at the beginning Large Breed Adult 25 or German Shepherd 24 from Royal Canin. Later use any quality kibble that doesn’t contain too much protein (< 25%). Soak the kibble in hot water (approx 120 F) wait 20 – 30 min. and feed while it is still hand warm.

You can mix alternately some yogurt, juice, fruits, salad, vegetables, herbs or  boiled eggs into the kibble. Also green tribe is quite healthy and most dogs like it. Also giving now and then a teaspoon of thistle oil or sunflower oil and some vitamin C to the food is recommended. Vitamin C only until the puppy is 6-9 months old. If you decide to feed a larger amount of meat (never raw meat from pigs) you also should add some calcium supplement. Otherwise we do not recommend adding any minerals or vitamins. The dish should be placed high and after 5-10 min you should take it away. Never leave food out for them at all times. Please be careful not to overfeed – most of the joint problems during growth are caused by overfeeding and/or over exercise.
Your puppy should always have water available. Irish Wolfhounds drink quite a lot.

Before 10 – 12 months avoid long walks (longer than 15-20 min.) or exercise beside a bicycle or horse.

Increase exercise very slowly. You should let your puppy play as long as it wants (but don’t let other dogs or children animate your puppy to excessive exercise). Irish Wolfhounds can get joint hygromas – never drain it – it will heal spontaneously but can take weeks or even months. It is not dangerous as long as the pup doesn’t show any limping or pain. If you have any problems, questions or if you are worried – please give us a call, we will try to help you as much as we can.
We would like to ask one small favor that hopefully won’t be a concern for many years.  One day your puppy will be old and will pass on or will have to be euthanized. Please, inform us about the cause of death and the exact date. For us as breeders this information is also of great importance.

Thank you in advance, but for now…

Enjoy your pup!
